What are the Characteristics of a Quality Paint Brush?
Good paint brushes are properly "chisled" and tapered so that you can paint a straight line. This tapering allows the bristles to come to a point. Cheap brushes have a blunt shape to the bristles - they are all the same length and all stop at the end of the brush forming a "box-like" shape to the bristles. Most good brushes have a blend of the best filaments which give a balanced firmness to the brush and prevents the brush for losing it's shape when being used even for extended periods of time. The tips of a quality brush are "flagged" meaning they are split ended. This flagging allows the brush to hold more paint and allows the paint to be smoothed out better and mimic the natural bristle brushes.
Types of Paint Brushes
Natural bristle or synthetic
For oil based paints and varnishes natural "china" bristle brushes are most commonly used. China bristle brushes are usually made from the hair of hogs and often are imported from China where these hogs are found. There are two versions of China bristle brushes: black and white. The black bristle is stiffer and is used with enamels and paints. The white bristle is softer and makes for a good varnish brush and for use with thinner viscosity oil materials.
Synthetic blends come in many varieties. Latex paints are applied with synthetic bristle brushes. The water from latex paint will cause a China bristle brush to lose it's firmness and shape. Some blends are softer for thinner materials and others are firmer for heavy brushing of thicker paints.
Sash or wall brush etc......
Both natural or synthetic paint brushes come in different varieties of "types": Sash brushes (flat or angled), for enameling and trim work. Wall brushes, used to cut in walls, or paint exterior siding and trim. Oval brushes, which hold more paint, are used for exterior brushing. Varnish brushes, These are china bristle brushes, which are reserved for varnish only, this prevents old flecks of color from being deposited into new varnish work. Staining brushes, are soft white china bristle brushes.
Purdy paint brushes are considered the best paint brushes by knowledgeable professional painters who daily rely on these tools to cut in straight lines and lay down a smooth brush-stroke free coat of enamel.
Are they worth the money? You may pay a bit more for the quality of a Purdy brush, but if you clean them after every use and store them correctly, the brushes will last a long, long time.
