Repairing Drywall

Drywall repair is a skill that every painter and every home owner who paints must learn.  There are many tricks of the trade and materials to help speed up the process and make it easier.

Repairing Holes in Drywall
Small holes of a 1/2 or less can be filled with drywall compound and then taped and finished.  Using quick setting drywall compound will speed up the process which usually takes about four coats of drywall compound to totally finish smooth.  Larger holes will usually require squaring off the opening and inserting a piece of new drywall using either drywall clips or another method of securing the drywall piece in place.  The drywall patch is then smoothed over ( after taping with drywall tape ) with drywall compound allowed to dry, then sanded.  There are metal patching materials available for surfacing over holes made for the DIY'er, follow the manufacturer's instructions for repairing with these materials.

To repair and finish drywall you will need a set of drywall knives, a six inch, 10 inch and  12 inch blade.  You will also want a inside corner knife and mud pan.

Dustless Sanding
While not totally dust free, you can come fairly close to that with a HEPA filtered vacuum and the proper sanding attachments.  See dust free sanding

Taping and Finishing
Joint finishing is done with either hand tools: drywall taping knives (also called a broad knife), drywall trowels, or with automatic tools or banjos.  Special taping and finishing tools are sometimes employed for inside and outside corners (corner knife or corner tool).  Rounded corners are sometimes finished  with rubber tools.

Sanding
Hand sanders and pole sanders are used in conjunction with either pre-cut drywall sandpaper or sanding screens.   There are a number of dustless sanders (both hand or pole sander versions) for occupied house sanding (or new construction), used today for dust free (almost) sanding.
