Wood Finishing:
Stained woodwork never goes out of style, and unlike paint - lasts for years without needing to be refinished.

Shellac, Varnish or Polyurethane.  People have different tastes.  Some like their woodwork to have a dull flat finish, others feel that a flat finish looks under finished and prefer a semi gloss varnish for a smooth to the touch sealed surface.

The timeless appeal of stained woodwork

Some customers appreciate the quality of a hand rubbed satin finish, requesting the work to be buffed and waxed for an extra slick and smooth to the touch finish.

The natural character of wood and the endless variety of wood grain design makes every piece of stained trim a work of natural art.

It doesn't have to be all the trim in the house, many times just the mantle, hand railing and the front entrance door get the special treatment of stain and varnish
Stain Matching

Stain can be matched to other stained items in the house.

Often the wood trim is matched to the kitchen cabinets or if the floor is hardwood, the stain color of the floor.

Varnishing

Generally it takes two or three coats of varnish to seal the stained work properly.

The first coats are usually a quick dry sealer such as shellac. The finish coat is oil varnish (or  polyurethane if dewaxed shellac is used).

Finishes come in the usual sheens: satin, semi-gloss and gloss.  Semi-gloss is the most common sheen used.
Wood Stain

There are two types of wood stains used on architectural trim:
  • Penetrating stains
  • Wiping stains
Penetrating stains have the best clarity -showing more grain detail.

Wiping stains offer more control and better uniformity of color.
