Northville, Michigan Residents:
Is the company legal and legit? The state of Michigan requires that painting companies to be licensed with the state for the homeowner’s protection. The state has a competency test in which a painter must demonstrate the knowledge of the painting craft, this test must be passed in order to obtain a license to work as a painter. There is also a complaint resolution system in place for the state to deal with the painters it has issued a license to.
Liability insurance is for the homeowner’s protection. If the contractor damages the homeowner’s property in the process of doing the job, liability insurance will make it right and take care of the homeowner. You wouldn’t want to have an auto accident with an uninsured motorist and you don’t want to hire an uninsured painter either.
Does the contractor have experience necessary to do the job right? Or is he using you to learn on the job and gain that experience and hopefully everything will go OK? Time has a way of weeding out the shady and unqualified painting contractors. Word gets out about poor performing contractors sooner or later and they find it hard to get work, eventually they drop out. Someone who has been around for a while is usually doing something right.

Who actually does the work?
It is common in the painting business for a paint company owner to come out and meet with the homeowner, give an estimate on the project, and assure the homeowner that “everything will be fine” they will oversee the job from start to finish, and then he goes and kicks his feet up onto the proverbial desk and turns the job over to inexperienced college kids or some other formally unemployed (and now “painter“) apprentice to actually do the painting work. Leaving you to deal with the day to day task of dealing with and communicating with “Jethro” and “Bubba” who are left to do your paint job.
What type of paint does the painter use? Does he cut costs and use cheap paint? Is he using the bargain brand paint?
- Use your own good judgment
Talk to the painter. Ask questions, does he appear to be an honest person? Will he really put on the two coats that he is promising , or will he do one because you are not there and won’t know one way or the other? Don’t do business with someone you don’t like or trust.
