People Skills
No matter how you look at it a painter needs good social skills. After all, the painter is working in someone else’s house and is going to be interacting with the homeowner and family for a period of time.
People skills include: The ability (and willingness) to communicate with the homeowner about job related issues as they arise, or potential problems that might arise. In fact, all communication should be polite and professional.
People skills involve courteous behavior. Leaking oil from your vehicle on the driveway, tracking mud into the house, leaving a mess at the end of the day or job is not courteous behavior.
Business Skills
From estimating to scheduling the job to understanding customer expectations and over-delivering on them, business skill is important for a painting contractor. A contractor who doesn’t answer in a timely way phone calls and emails will not have happy customers or last very long in this business.
Trade Skills
The necessary skill to do the job right. It is common to find painters who can roll out a wall but are not very good at patching and repairing drywall, or hanging wallpaper. Usually, the painters with the greater number of years in business have the most experience and are the most “well rounded” in terms of trade skills. A painter should be proficient in the various tasks belonging to the painting trade including: drywall repair, wallpaper hanging and removal, deck refinishing, faux finishing, wood staining and wood finishing, interior painting, exterior painting and the numerous other minor tasks that a painter does: matching colors, puttying, caulking etc…. Trade Skill comes with experience.

I view painters who have developed the trade skills from faux painting, wallpaper hanging, quality wood staining and finishing, drywall repair and texturing etc… as full fledged painters and true craftsman in the painting trade, and I view the rest as …. well ....... “apprentices”.
