Tips on Selecting a Painting Contractor

Anyone who picks up a brush can call themselves a “painter”.  They can put a classified ad in the local paper and pass out flyers and business cards as a painting company.  There are lots of incompetent painters out in the community today who do inadequate work, creating ill will with homeowners all over the area doing just that.  They have not been trained, have not shown to the satisfaction of the State that they are competent.  They are often “learning on the job” - your job.  They often hire inexperienced students or apprentices to do their painting, because they are cheap labor.

There are a couple of issues that most honest, competent painters are in possession of:  they are properly licensed by the State and are members of their trade organization.

The Painter’s License
For the protection of the consumer, the State of Michigan requires that anyone or any company who offers themselves as a “painter” to the residential community, to show themselves competent in the painting and decorating trade and to obtain a license.  This is not merely a recommendation of the State - but a legal requirement..  The process requires the tradesman to pass a test demonstrating competence in the painting trade.  Many painters, not having the necessary working knowledge of the trade, nor the work experience, avoid this licensing process altogether - preferring to work “underground”  - hoping the homeowner will never request to see their license.

A quality painting service company is honest.   An honest painter will conduct his / her business in accordance with the law, including the issues of licensing , hazardous waste disposal,  obtaining insurance, doing the work in accordance with accepted industry standards,  complying with the scope of the work as stated in their contracts, etc……..  It doesn't cost much more to hire a competent painter - and the aggravation it saves you - is priceless.

The Painters Trade Organization
Most competent painters belong to their trade organization.  The main painting trade organization in America is the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America.   You can check into their website to “find a pro” who is a PDCA member in your area.  PDCA members are kept up to date on the latest “best practices” and government regulations, including those which relate to consumer safety - like how to prepare and conduct a paint job where lead paint is present , and how to protect workers and the consumer from the hazards of lead when painting a home built prior to 1978 - the year lead paint was banned in consumer paint in America.  The PDCA is the accepted producer of painting trade standards for paint contracting work.  PDCA members will usually comply with these recognized standards for their own workmanship standards.
