The Story of "Bubba and Butch"
Not all painters are competent. Some think it to be "no big deal" if they leak oil on your driveway from their ' 75 station wagon, which they keep around for their side job - of painting. They can be rude, and crude in their behavior. They will act as if they are doing you a favor to paint your house. I call these characters "Bubba and Butch", I see them (and those just like them) in the paint store everyday.
Bubba never finished high school, he never had much use for "that book learning stuff". If fact, Bubba's aversion to books, training and "tests" have kept him from actually learning the painting trade, passing the competency exam, and becoming a licensed painter - even though the law requires it.
Butch is Bubba's friend. Butch knows absolutely nothing about painting. "I can swing a paint brush, what else is there to know?" he often replies.
How do these guys get their painting jobs? After all, nobody would hire them - would they? Well, Bubba and Butch are actually sub-contractors, they get their work from Mr. Slick Salesman.
"Mr. Slick" I call him for short, is a polished, well spoken guy, who has no interest really in the painting business, he just wants to sell to somebody services or anything and make a buck. He sells window replacement jobs, and some remodeling work as well as painting. He uses Bubba and Butch because they are cheap labor. The homeowner requests an estimate and Mr. Slick shows up. He is impressive, well spoken and gives them the right price. So they give Mr. Slick the job.
There is one thing you need to know about Mr. Slick, he is not going to do the painting. He hates painting. In fact, you will never see Mr. Slick on the job site at all. He gets the job, and then sends Bubba and Butch to actually do the work. Most homeowners are surprised when Bubba and Butch show up at their door (without Mr. Slick) to begin the work. They assumed Mr. Slick was going to be part of the painting team, but he has better things to do. They are left to deal with "Bubba and Butch".
And so it goes..... Another lesson learned by an un-suspecting homeowner. Believe me, next time.- they won't make the same mistake again.
