What type of roller cover should I use?
Most professional painters use a shorter nap on smooth walls and with paints that have a sheen. Semi gloss and satin sheen paints for instance would require a shorter nap cover to achieve a smoother and more even sheen uniformity. Generally a nap length of about 3/8" is good for most sheen wall painting. If you need a extra fine appearance for an enameled door, you may want to use a shorter nap of perhaps 1/4" nap length.
Flat paints can be rolled on with a longer nap length. The longer the nap length - the more paint the roller cover will hold - as a general rule. Most professional painters will roll on flat paints on interior drywall with a 1/2" - 3/4" nap length roller cover. Rough exterior surfaces may require even longer nap lengths. T-1-11 siding and rough sawn wood trim may require a 3/4" - 1" nap. With the longer nap lengths "back rolling" is done to smooth the paint out and minimize the roller stipple.
