Qualities of a Good Paint Roller Cover
Good Hiding
Good hiding is a result of 1. good paint 2. a good roller cover and 3. good application skill. A quality roller cover should have a dense fabric so that good hiding may be obtained. Not all paints and or roller covers will achieve one coat hiding, but often (not always - but often ) with a good one coat hiding paint and a dense fabric roller cover, you can obtain hiding in one coat. To help achieve one coat coverage most professional painters will "double roll" the paint - laying it on heavily and then lightly rolling it "off" to smooth out the stipple and get better hide. See article on Paint Rolling Technique
Shed Resistant
The better roller covers are shed resistant. Poor quality covers will leave roller fibers in the wet paint. A trick that many professionals use is to vacuum a new cover before using it to remove any loose fibers. Another trick is to wrap the roller cover with masking tape and then remove it and with the removal you will take off the loose fibers. Another tip (in addition to the above procedures) is to start painting with a new cover in an inconspicuous area, such as a closet before proceeding on to areas that are more important.
Paint Loading
Good roller covers will hold more paint which means less dipping into the bucket, and more rolling on to the surface to be painted.
