Stop sanding the old way
Vacuum sanders are the smart way to sand drywall compound
Eliminate the drywall sanding dust at the point of creation.
The Dustless Drywall Sanding System.
eliminate the sanding dust
The dustless sanders are not absolutely 100% dust free sanding systems, but they are for the most part - dust free. The better the system, the more dust free the sanding operation will be. The dustless sanding attachments along with the filters (either wet or dry) have radically reduced the sanding dust generated in the drywall sanding process. These are a must for all remodeling jobs.
There are two types of dustless sanding systems:
Wet or dry.
The dry system type (Fiba Tape, Hyde etc..) pulls the sanding dust from the sanding head accessory tool directly into a shop vacuum. The shop vacuum then must be fitted with a fine dust filter, preferably a HEPA filter to capture the fine dust and prevent it from being blown back out through the exhaust. The best type of filtering for the dry vacuuming system is “two stage” filtering. A two stage filtering set up uses a fine dust collection bag as the first stage of the filtering process. The collection bag will catch most of the dust allowing only the finest particles to pass through to the second filtering stage: the final HEPA cartridge filter.
The wet system type (Sand & Kleen) pulls the sanding dust from the vacuum attachment sanding head through a bucket (filled with water) which acts as a pre-filter before it reaches your shop vacuum. This type of system is best for those shop vacuums that do not have a good two stage filtering system with a HEPA filter.
The components of a dustless sanding system are:
Sanding Head
A dustless drywall sanding system requires vacuum sanding with a sanding accessory. There are two types of sanding accessories: 1. The hand sander, which is a hand-held sander. 2. The pole sander, usually a telescoping pole sander. Pole sanders will either pull the sanding dust down through the pole itself, then into the vacuum hose, or be equipped with an external hose directly attached to the sanding head.
Sanding Screen
Most of the vacuum sanding systems pull the sanding dust through the holes in the sanding screen through air channels in the sanding head to the shop vacuum. Sanding screen works with standard pole sanders and hand sanders, as well as with the dustless type hand and pole sanders.
Hepa (or high efficiency) Filter
If you are using the dry sanding method, you will need a HEPA filter for your shop vacuum. Shop Vac also recommends their Ultra-Web® Cartridge Filter as well as the Shop-Vac® with CleanStream® - Gore® HEPA Cartridge Filter (which is a wet or dry filter) or the standard HEPA Cartridge Filter (dry pick up only). See Shop Vac brand and other brand filters.
Dust Collection Bag
Upstream dust collection bags attach to the hose inlet into the vacuum canister/tank. These pre-filter and collect sanding dust allowing only the finest dust to pass through to the final cartridge filter (HEPA or high efficiency). See Shop Vac brand drywall collection filter bags.
