What type of brush do you need?

Trim:  Latex semi gloss enamels are usually applied with a 2” flat or angled sash brush.  The angled sash will get into corners a little easier (particularly for DIY’ers),  For latex enamels use a nylon or nylon and polyester blend.  Oil is best applied with a natural “china” bristle brush (usually black bristle which is a little stiffer than white china bristle).

The best brushes have good bristle density, are chiseled to a point and have “flagged” ends on the bristles.  A good brush will hold a lot of paint, and release it evenly in a straight line, without heavy brush marks.

Wall painting:  Brushes are used in conjunction with a roller for wall painting.  These are know as wall brushes.  The duty of a wall brush is to “cut in” at the ceiling / wall corner as well as around all fixed items on the wall and at the baseboard.

Wall brushes are usually in the 3” or 4” width range. Some painter’s like angled, others like flat bristles.  A good wall brush should hold a lot of paint. This requires good bristle density.

Exterior painting:  If you are painting siding or doing a lot of brushing on the exterior, you may want to use a semi oval brush.  These brushes hold A LOT of paint.  Less dipping and more paint on the house means less fatigue and a quicker job done.

Paint Brush Accessories
Used by most painters to dry a freshly cleaned brush.  Place the brush into the spinner and insert into a 5 gallon bucket to catch the spin off, and spin the brush dry.  It will dry out a brush and make it ready for paint color changes.

  • Brush keeper
Don’t clean out your oil base paint brush everyday if you are going to use it again the next day.  Store it in a brush keeper in mineral spirits until the next day.  Remove the brush and spin it out, and you are ready to paint again.  Reduce used solvent and eliminate unnecessary hazardous waste.

Brush cleaner will dissolve hardened paint in a paint brush that was not cleaned or not cleaned well.  Pour some into a pail, and set the brush in the cleaner and allow it to work for time, then remove and comb out the paint debris.  Once cleaned as such, clean out the brush (latex) with soap and water with a good rinse or clean out the brush (china bristle) in clean mineral spirits.  Spin dry.

Used to soften and straighten the bristles of cleaned brushes.  Use this when cleaning out the brush at the end of the day.  Combing will soften and separate the bristles brushes that were cleaned but not well.  If the brush has hardened, the comb used in conjunction with brush cleaner will remover hard paint debris and deeply clean out a hardened brush.
