Wood finishing usually involves staining, clear coating and rubbing out the finish. There are a number of different types of stains: oil based penetrating stain and  wiping or gel stains that are the most common versions used on new wood trim and doors in house painting.  There are water based stains (which usually require a conditioner), and aniline dye stains.

Clear finishes can be brushed or sprayed.  An HVLP sprayer is usually employed for spray application.  Brushing is done with china bristle brushes or a mix of natural bristle brushes (often soft ox hair and hog hair).  Synthetic water based finishes are applied with nylon and/or polyester bristle brushes.

Clear coats are: shellac, varnish, water based clears, lacquer and conversion varnishes, urethanes and lacquers.  Learn more about wood finishing at The Painting and Decorating Concourse "Wood Finishing" page.
